I really haven't seen much of the Japanese manga, I think the
English version is better, because it's a better way to get into the Japanese
culture, and is REALLY WELL DONE!
Sailor Evolution Revolution [e]
I prefer the original version of the manga. My reasoning behind it is
that it actually is Naoko-sensei's first hand work. Whereas Mixx made many
mistakes when they published it. They even called Hotaru "Jenny" for one part
(they later fixed it). I also think it's unfortunate they call some of the
characters by their English dub names. But they did make quite a few mistakes.
It's too bad that Sailor Moon was Mixx's first translated manga... Oh! Another
thing... I also don't like that Mixx switched around the pages so it reads the
American way. It's more fun to read from right to left :)
I never read any manga until a few years ago when I read the last act of SM in Chinese (yeah, I'm Chinese) and then it was the English translated version by usagiandmamoru.com, which was very good. Since I never read the original I can't say. Maybe after I learn Japanese in the near future I will know better. But I do know the quote "Chinese versions of Japanese manga are known to stick to the original with the same pictures etc." by Mandy is very true. So i guess my fav is the Chinese translated version. The English translated, as it's been said, is sooooo bad. Too many mistakes in it.
Serena Crescent Dayton
English translated, I don't know Japanese.

I first started reading the manga in 1995 but it was the Chinese version rather then the Japanese version. (Chinese versions of Japanese manga are known to stick to the original with the same pictures etc.) But I really wanted to read the English version as where I live, in the UK manga and anime aren't as popular as they are in the USA o_O but you could order them online so yay! for that :)...
When I read the English versions though they weren't very accurate with the translations... there were slight mistakes in some places... they switched from using the dubbed names to the Japanese names etc! etc!... it wasn't very good.
At the end of the day though I'm glad and happy that TokyoPop at least translated the manga into English because now more people would know about the manga which started one of the more famous animes! Hopefully one day in the near future, they might re-issue it again and trying to stay faithful to the original... then perhaps I would like the English version better then the Japanese!
Mandy
As for me, I am in total agreement with Beth. She certainly is right about dubbed version of Sailor Moon. First off, why exactly is everyone complaining about Dic and Mixx and yada, yada, yada? Mind you, Dic originally put Sailor Moon as a show for a teenage audience, but a lot of parents complained and Dic had to edit the scenes and re-do their script, so, as you can see it is NOT their fault, but only the parents' of children who found it offensive. As for the Manga, I think Mixx did and outstanding job, without them we'd have never known of the Manga of Sailor Moon and it is easy to find out what mistakes (if any) they made by a little research. I'm behind Mixx, Dic, and Cloverway a 100%! Thank you^^
Personally, I prefer the original version - of the anime, that is. DiC and Cloverway did a horrible job of translating, and they added or removed important phrases which TOTALLY changes the scene. They also hired horrible voice actors. Take Luna for instance - She sounds young in the original version, but the dub makes her sound like an old hag! Usagi's american voice is annoying and her crying makes me sick to my stomach.
As for the manga, Mixx is my only means of reading it. Sure it's horrible, with many errors and confusing changes, but I can't read japanese, so I have to stick with Mixx. I'd prefer the real version of course, but keeps me happy. Annoyed, but happy. I just wish they'd stop with all that "Alex Haruka" jazz and such.
Regardless, the Japanese version is better, because it's the original. No translation could ever compare to the original.
Mixx did a very good translation. I compared it with Alex Glover's translations and they were so similar. True they had some problems but.... it is 100 times better than the DiC dub and thats saying somthing cause I kinda like the dub.
I prefer the original Japanese manga, I just wish I could read Japanese. I own the English translated manga too, because when you print out translations it's often hard to tell which panel the dialogue belongs to. Most of the translation isn't too bad (let's face it, they can't edit it as badly as they did the dub, because you can't take panels out of a page without people noticing) but I have no idea why they changed some of the things they did. Like when Usagi and Chibiusa switched ages--in the Japanese, the inner senshi see her and immediately fear it's the Black Lady (makes sense.) They changed that in the translated version to being afraid of "her hair! how creepy!" Does that make sense to anyone?
I like MiXX cause i can understand it
Greta AKA beth
MiXX didn't do a bad translation, but I'm not impressed with the way the mess they made of Chibi Usa's name. (Is it Rini or Bunny or what?!) If I was reading that without knowing the original, I would have been really confused. The way they used the dub names for the inners, and then the original ones for the outer senshi, because there were no dub names for them. And Rei watching Buffy? Please, Buffy wasn't even on television when that chapter was drawn, we're talking 1995 here! Also, the way they keep mixing up 'senshi' and 'scouts' in the SuperS manga is really annoying. But it could have been worse- not sure how, but there'll be a way...
I prefer Kodansha to MiXX, merely because it is the original, and thus the correct version. ^_^
In my opinion, Mixx/Chix Comics did a good job of introducing the manga to the American public. I myself am an American and am glad to be given the opportunity to read the manga. However, I dislike the fact that they continuously make references to American things that didn't appear in the original (does Demi Moore looking like Ami and Starbucks ring a bell?) They also got a little careless with the translations- Red Crow? Kronos? Though I can't read the original version, I'm sure if I could I would enjoy it a lot more.
I have _nothing_ against the dub. They are _fine_. So WHAT, if they changed around the happenings a bit. They still kept the story-line straight, and DiC's voices were all good (except Luna's). I love Molly's voice (cute). And in the new dub, they did an even better job, but the voices were... um... I liked Serena's. I _know_ a lot of people say it's atrocious, but it's not. OK, it yodles. It cracks. But when it is talking in a serious, calm voice, it is an absolutely beautiful voice, and I adore it! I like Linda even better than Terri! Of course, I prefer the original Anime over the dub. The voices in the original Anime (let's just call it original now, OK?) are SOOOOOOOOOOO kawaii! Especially Usagi's. It is incredibly adorable and fits Usagi perfectly. Even Naoko said that that's exactly how she pictured Usagi to sound. ^_^
Mitsuishi Kotono's got the best voice around, and I love it! The original is just so true and Usagi is tons more mature and ditzy in a _cute_ way, not annoying like sometimes in the dub.
Although I have only read the mixx version of the manga, since I cannot read japanese I only see the english translated phrases. And from what I've read, I think it is silly anyhow to change anything at all! People who read manga should be educated by the way people in Japan may be, and names and as well as phrases etc. should be left as Naoko had wished them and WROTE them! ^^;
I've only seen clips of the original, but I adore both sub and dub anime, I am getting the 3 original movies in sub form, but also definetly going to buy the 3 dubbed ones. Out of the three in dubbed I think SMR is done better and more enjoyable to watch. I like how some dub anime add something to a sentence at the end, I guess it makes it funny. Like when Serena (I am aware it's Usagi) said "We have to tell Lita, he's a player!" She was talking about Tiger Eye...that had me rollin' ^_^
I like both versions, if it wasen't for DIC I would have never known SMoon was here! Well some editing is a con but I don't complain about it, its still Sailormoon no matter what happens to it. I wasn't shown sailormoon till I went to a toy store and saw these strange dolls, my father told me about the show and I was like "Huh?" But DIC and my dad are the reason for me liking SMoon.
I like the NA dubs by DIC (kinda) except wen they skipped the 2 episodes of defeating Queen Beryl!!! What the heck did i miss?
The series I watch is the dub (unfortunatly) and I have some mangas I read. I personally like the Japanese better because it's the original, and it's just got that Japanese thing in it. I don't really like the dub, because they messed it up pretty bad.. (talk about the voices...) LoL.
I, personally, read the Japanese manga and the Mixx manga, and I feel that the Mixx manga is a pretty good translation. Of course, nothing compares to Takeuchi Naoko's original, but the Mixx didn't mess too much up. All they did was change the inner's, Chibiusa's, and Mamoru's names. Not too bad. I still prefer the Japanese version, but I read the Mixx. I like the Japanese better because the names and all words and places and such are the original things Naoko thought of, and I just like the originals of things. ^^;;;
Well of course you can't beat anything better than the original. I am a die hard fan of the original and always will be. It is the best without a doubt. The dub is just a silly childs show.
I, from what my friend says, would like the original Japanese version rather than the English dubbed. She says that they swear and stuff and that... well I'll skip the details. Besides, Rei-chan and Usagi's relationship is extremely downplayed in the dub. Go figure.
I like the japanese better. I think it's wrong to cut out the fact the Uranus and Neptune were lovers and to make Zoicite out to be a female, so kids in the US wouldn't know that he was (or seemed to be) homosexual. It is every where - kids need to learn to accept it, and that isn't going to happen if DiC won't let homosexual relationships be seen. I understand that alot of parents will complain, but they don't do anything. If they would go into a room alone and make noises, I could see parents making a fuss, but nothing happens! But there are alot of people who are against gays, and I guess its better not to piss them off. Business as usual. The customer who complains the most is always right. I also don't like some of DiC's VA's. Serena sounds like a 30 year old english professor from Yale! It does not fit her! She has to have a young sounding voice and not sound like a grammer scholar (look at her school work- you think she's ever going to sound articulate?). Some of the voices are okay, but Serena's is terrible. And Luna sounds strange, too. I don't watch DiC often because the voices piss me off, but when I do watch, it's basically to see Rini and to watch the cartoon and look at the way Naoko draws them. Its beautiful in english AND japanese.
Tumor
Well I used to watch the dub until I found out how much they hacked it apart, changing EVERYTHING. I've seen some original subtitled episodes, and two of the movies, uncut and subtitled.
