Web Site Prejudices

Years ago, I decided upon the world of Sailor Moon as the subject of my fan site for my web publishing course. Going through the SM web community of 1999 I could not find a single site all about the English-language version of the manga. And only a couple of sites featured any information about this release at all. So, Bunny's Ambition was created to fill in this gap and my hope was that it was not just another generic site, but a good source for information that was otherwise difficult to obtain. I like to think that now, coming up on the fourth birthday for Bunny's that it is a quality site and an addition to the overall appeal of SM sites.

Yes, many people do dislike the English version. There were quite a few mistakes made by Mixx/Tokyopop, but I feel this was to be expected as it was one of their first forays into manga translation and distribution. But, does a personal dislike for the way this company handled the North American release mean my site is inferior?

The instance that got me so irritated was when I found the Silver Senshi Shrine Network (http://www.silversenshi.net/sssn.html) a few months back. Granted, this does not specifically deal with Bunny's Ambition, but with my Bunny Tsukino character shrine, A Soldier's Policy, which is a portion of Bunny's. I read through the purpose of the SSSN: "...the group is attempting to ease the pain of visitors who are looking for good shrines. The ones here were handpicked and voted on by all members. The pages are excellent and contain more information than your average site." I felt my look at Bunny through ASP qualified for this group and wanted to submit it for the decision of the group. But then I read the rules. "3. NO ENGLISH SERIES SHRINES. An English section is permitted but your shrine must include mainly information about the japanese series."

So, because I fill the void of the English-language manga site gap, my site isn't worthy? I am not even allowed for the group to look at my site to determine it's quality? To see how much time and effort I put into it?It seems to me this rule was made because many English series shrines (especially dealing with the anime dub version) are below the SSSN standard. But is that really a good enough reason for their sweeping generalization? For lumping me in with the stereotypical "dumb" English series shrines?

I emailed the main address for the group, asking them to explain why they had this rule in place. I did mention that it seemed to me that it was stereotypical and narrow-minded and wanted some clarification on their part if that was not the intent. But, I never have heard back from them.

I guess I shouldn't be so upset at running across something like the SSSN since there really aren't that many groups/lists I wish to join that use this rule. But, being unfairly judged does irk. Especially when my sites are rated well by review groups and visitors.
